Assembly members of the Greater Accra Region has urge President Akufo Addo to as
a matter of urgency fulfill his constitutional mandate of appointing the thirty
percent of Assembly members as stipulated in the 1992 constitution to make the
Assemblies fully functional.
Briefing the
press today in Accra, Hon. Razak Issah Abdul, Assembly member of Akwetemman
[Okaikoi municipal] noted that assemblies are yet to have full compliments of
their membership to start sitting and take decisions for implementation despite
the inauguration of the thirty eight newly carved assemblies.
Act 936 which
establishes the assemblies stipulates that the president is mandated to appoint
30% of the assembly members in consultation with the traditional authorities
and interest groups within the various newly created assemblies and also
nominate the Municipal and District Chief Executives to make the assemblies
fully functional but is yet to experience the effect.
He cited
that, the current condition of sanitations in the various communities and
impending rains and its associated floods in some areas and communities further
deepens their frustrations.
Hon. Razak
said the modal standing orders for, Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan
Assemblies which states that “The presiding Member of the Assembly shall be
elected at the inaugural meeting” could not be fulfilled at the inaugural
meeting due to the absence of the government appointees and that has brought a
vacuum at the newly created districts.
In view of
this, they are therefore drawing the attention of the president, H.E. Nana
Danquah Akuffo Addo to act swiftly to fill these vacuums and also ensure that
all the various department and structures of the Assemblies are put in place
and well- resourced to fully carry out their functions Mr. Razak pleaded.
