The special prosecutor, Martin Amidu
has said that his office is working assiduously to ensure that the vision that
informed the setting up the special prosecutor office materialize.
He urge Ghanaian to disabuse their
minds of not seeing his office of prosecuting corrupt civil servants for his
office has the authority to initiate investigations which will lead to
gathering credible fact before charging a suspect to court.
“My office does not talk until it is
ready to charge somebody and send him to court. I might be conducting
preliminary investigations on you, you will never know until I decide it’s now
time the evident is sufficient to start full investigations and it is at this
point that you get to know that you are the subject of investigation”. Mr.
Amidu stated.
He made these assertions in a press
briefing organized by the Ghana Audit Service to prosecute civil servant with
Ghost names on salary.
He noted that his office is not going
to witch hunts but will make sure that any cases they prosecute, there is a
certain degree of probability that the offence has been committed because every
prosecution means an expenditure of state funds.
“We wouldn’t waste public funds
because people are emotional and depressed, informing me to prosecute people
and expect me to go to court and acting accordingly, we would have to act
professionally” he stressed.
“My job is to prevent, investigate,
prosecute, recover, access and proceeds of access of corrupt and corruption
offences” Mr. Amidu he stressed.
Mr. Amidu pledged his support to the
Ghana Audit Service in prosecuting all civil servants with ghost names on
government pay roll which will be starting on the 17 of July, 2018 in the
central region.
